Isamu Noguchi, born in 1904 in the USA, was a Japanese-American artist and designer known for his innovative thinking and ability to bend the rules of sculpture. Noguchi's designs, including furniture, sculpture, and landscape architecture, showcase his belief that "everything is sculpture." In 1951, he began designing the Akari Light Sculptures, elegant contemporary forms crafted with Japanese artistry by skilled artisans at the traditional, family-run Ozeki workshop in Gifu, Japan using washi paper and bamboo ribbing. Each light in this series bears Noguchi's signature as a mark of authenticity.  Noguchi said of the series:  'The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun – so that its warmth may continue to fill our rooms at night.'

It has no tears or obvious discolouration to the paper shade.
