L01 "Godot" Daybed by Pierre Chapo
France, c.1959
£18,000
The L01 “Godot” daybed was designed by Pierre Chapo in 1959 as a commission for writer Samuel Beckett, with its name referencing Beckett’s 'Waiting for Godot'. It became one of the first pieces in Chapo’s furniture collection, officially presented in 1963. With its solid wood construction, simple proportions and distinctive exposed joinery, the L01 reflects Chapo’s belief in letting the material and craftsmanship speak for themselves.
Born in Paris in 1927, Pierre Chapo studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts before turning to furniture and woodworking. His designs combine traditional craftsmanship with an architectural sensibility. He opened his Paris gallery in 1958 and established his workshop and factory in Gordes in 1967.
The frame is in good condition, showing some natural signs of age and use. The mattress is new and has been upholstered in an alpaca fabric (70% alpaca, 30% wool) in Limestone.
